POSTPARTUM MAMA CARE SUPPLIES

For my daughter’s home birth I had a long list of items from my midwives that I had to gather before my due date.  My son was born in the hospital so a lot of the items did not apply, but I learned a lot about what I liked using to take care of myself during this crucial time.  Here is my list of items for you to gather for yourself after you give birth to make sure your postpartum journey is as comfortable and healing as possible.

The postpartum period is such an important time for all mamas.  It is the time that you need to take care of yourself the most.  Which is counter-intuitive because you have a newborn baby who needs you so much right there in front of you.  So don’t forget that you have to fill your own cup in order to be able to provide and care for your baby and your family.  Take care of yourselves, mamas!  ❤

This here is my list of the top items every mother needs after giving birth

FridaBaby also made a new bottle that I have not tried, but I like their baby products so their mom products might be worth a try as well

Herbal Perineal Spray

I love the Sitz bath the most, but this is nice to have on hand if you don’t have time to brew the herbs and are in need of some soothing down there

Arnica

for soothing sore muscles and body aches after giving birth.  Rub liberally all over!  It’s natural and homeopathic and works wonders.  (I keep it around for my little ones when they get bumps and bruises or for myself or husband if we get sore or injured).

Haakaa Breastpump

A friend who is a lactation consultant showed me this non-electronic food grade silicone breast pump that I think is so cool since I was never fond of pumping because of the loud sounds and the electronic pulling sensation.  This is more like a milk catcher, and works through suction of the breast to capture milk.  Love it!

Sepia: Woman’s Best Friend in Homeopathy

I have been feeling the ups and downs of my second pregnancy and its stark contrasts with my first: this time I have a toddler to care for unlike my first pregnancy when it was just me, my hubby, cat and pups!

Controlling the mood swings and keeping a level head are difficult when a big part of every toddler’s job is testing boundaries and mama’s patience.  With the hormones fluctuating and my body changing so much, I have needed Sepia in the 200c potency.  It has been helping me immensely.

But the thing with homeopathy is that you have to take your remedies three times a day religiously to really reap the benefits.  I feel that’s why a lot of people write the remedies off– because they don’t take the right remedy often enough so the remedy they take “doesn’t work.”  It does work, it just has to be carefully selected, which is why I have done so much training, and it has to be taken regularly, which is why I have so much respect for the remedies and they are such a big part of my life.  Otherwise, I forget to take them often enough and I am not reaping the benefits.

Since I order my remedies in large quantities, I have begun to repackage them into smaller personal bottles.  I keep one set of the remedies I am taking regularly in my bathroom and one in my purse.  This way I can take them as needed-3 times a day or more, depending on how I’m feeling that day.

Check back soon: Sepia 200c in a 1oz bottle will be available for purchase in my Esty shop.

Here is a lovely article I came across about the “Wise Woman” of homeopathy, the remedy of the cuttlefish ink, also known as Sepia and its immense benefits for all women.  I certainly have been feeling them.  I hope you enjoy!  Xoxo

Prenatal Yoga Before Bedtime

I’ve written before about Queen’s Pose, the supported restorative version of reclined baddha konasana, and this is one of my favorite before bed poses to do, especially when pregnant.

But there is one other pose that I love doing before bed because it relaxes the mind and body so quickly and simultaneously opens the hips and back setting you up for restful sleep: Supported child’s pose.  Forward folds naturally relax the central nervous system and when they’re supported the results are two-fold.  By placing a bolster on the floor in front of you and spreading your knees a part, making sure your toes are touching, you rest one cheek on the bolster and breathe deeply.  After you’re ready to switch sides, gently support yourself with your hands, elbows bent, and turn your other cheek to rest on the bolster.  (Pic coming soon to demonstrate).  If one bolster is not enough height to support you comfortably, you can place an additional bolster on top or a yoga blanket or two.  When practicing this pose while pregnant make room for your belly comfortably at the foot of your bolster, do not rest on your belly.  You want your belly to hang freely and have space to open and the breath to expand naturally without constriction.  These restorative poses are wonderful birth prep as they open the hips, guide you towards the mind-body connection you’re looking to cultivate during labor and help you get the much-needed rest you need before giving birth and taking care of yourself and your little one.

Happy sleeping!

Mellow Mama

I started learning about homeopathy when my daughter was born to find out what was in her teething tablets and understand better how they worked. What unfolded was an entire world of remedies that can help everything from sugar cravings and anxiety to bee stings and sunburns. Once I began courses in homeopathy, I was led to another form of homeopathic remedies, the Bach flower essences, remedies that work by bringing mental and emotional imbalances such as anger, impatience and grief to more centered states of being to facilitate true healing.

I was especially thrilled to learn the Bach flowers as they are the very essences that had helped me battle anxiety and hives as a young child. I vividly remember my stepdad bringing home a little brown bottle with a yellow label on it, called Rescue Remedy, and finding such relief after just the first dose taken under my tongue. They became my magic drops, something that I kept with me wherever I went to help me feel better, more calm and at ease. The Bach flower essences work effectively and efficiently, especially with children who are so open to healing, and just like homeopathy they are safe and all natural.

That is why I developed Mellow Mama, my signature formula of five Bach flower essences to support peace of mind. So that every mom can have her own magic bottle to carry around with her in her purse/diaper bag/backpack. The flower essences in Mellow Mama are meant to be used throughout the day and as needed to help stay balanced, focused and at ease during the beautiful chaos that is motherhood. Because let’s face it, it isn’t easy raising tiny humans!

It is my goal to help other mothers just like me with children just like my daughter find gentle relief. To find true healing on a deeper level. In eastern medicine doctors treat the mother in order to treat the child, so if we start with ourselves, and care for ourselves, we will be that much better fit to care for our children.

In love and healing,
Celine/Inemom/Mellow Mama

Layering for the Littles

I’ve always been a big fan of layering so it’s no surprise I like to layer my daughter as well. When she was born I wasn’t really sure how to dress her. My mom told me that it’s best to put babies in a tshirt (onesie) and then put their clothes on top, like tshirt and leggings or a dress. I found that I liked this style of dressing my daughter because if she got cold or hot or needed a change of clothes along with her diaper change I would usually only have to change her undershirt and not her while outfit, plus I could easily take off or add on the layers.

The problem was, the typical undershirts (onesies) I found were short sleeve and would get bunched up under her clothes. Long sleeve onesies were always great for warm weather but I found an even better solution for layering that I wanted to share: the camisole onesie! Because they don’t get bunched up, they’re easy to use as a first layer and they’re so comfortable for my daughter.

The best part is, the ones that we love are made of soft organic cotton and come in three colors: soft pink, gray and white. They’re made by Burt’s Bees. You can find the camisole onesies here and the camisole tshirt here!

Xoxo,

Inemom

Montessori Learning Tower

We love our Learning Tower for its support in teaching our little one to help in everyday activities like preparing meals, washing hands and observing household activities. She’s twenty months old and able to be an active participant rather than a passive observer. The learning tower brings her at eye level so she is at the center of and can participate in all the action. In our house the kitchen is the central attraction: cooking, cleaning and self-care are just some of the things she is able to watch and help with.

Lending a hand and doing things for herself has built our little one’s confidence as well as helped her develop new skills. She has fun and plays while learning hands on. By bringing her into our daily activities we reap the benefits of working together as a family and are shaping her into the whole,  capable human being that she is.

The learning tower has creative open ended play capabilities as well: put a small blanket or sheet over the top and create a fort, fasten drapes to one side and you have a theater for a puppet show, lower or raise the platform for resting inside of or using as a desk…the options are endless. Most importantly, just remember to have fun!

We have this learning tower. Here’s a great link to a blog that outlines the different types of learning towers available out there:
